Sprawled across the bed
One hand on my scalp
The other under the pillow
First light through the panes of glass.
Gold fingers of sun
Stroking my hair
Porridge and toast
Thoughtful silence as I write my to-do list.
Whisper goodbye to the quiet house
To the train
To work
Then home.
Grilled bread and cheese
Canned tuna
And wine
The TV loud and intruding.
You could have been my companion
You could have fought for me when others failed
You might have told me you cared
Or I might have felt you by my side
(If just for a moment)
It doesn't bother me
I would have had enough anyway after a while
I'll swallow and look down when I see you
And pin back my hair to busy my hands.
One hand on my scalp
The other under the pillow
First light through the panes of glass.
Gold fingers of sun
Stroking my hair
Porridge and toast
Thoughtful silence as I write my to-do list.
Whisper goodbye to the quiet house
To the train
