Not Me
January 10th 2008 21:48
Prologue:
In a pub in New Zealand, I suddenly wondered why people were warming to me as I talked to them. I think all our words point to ideas about how we want ourselves to be seen, and I guess I started to wonder if the words I was speaking were just trying to project an image of myself that I thought was cool- not my real self at all.
It's about my laughter-
But it's really about how much fun I am.
It's about my friendliness-
But it's really about my validity.
It's about my accent-
But it's really about my identity.
It's about where I've travelled-
But it's really about my independence.
It's about what I do-
But it's really about respect.
It's about my meal choice-
But it's really about my body.
It's about my tattoo-
But it's really about my authenticity.
It's about me-
But it's not really.
It's just about the me I want to be
And the me they want me to be
Not me at all.
